Alburtos Horne Jr. more affectionally known as Al, was surrounded by family when he ran his last race to victory and went peacefully home to be with Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 1, 2023. Al Horne was born December 11, 1958, to Ethel Clarke Horne and Alburtos Horne Sr. in Weldon, NC.
He attended Phoebus High School in Hampton, VA, where he excelled at football and track. Heavily sought after in both sports, he was offered a full scholarship to attend the University of Tennessee in Knoxville as a member of their track team. From 1978 -1980 he was a member of the UTK Division 1 All-American Track and Field Team. While attending UTK Al met the love of his life Daphany L. Storey whom he shared 45 loving years with.
After leaving UTK, he joined the US Army in 1983. After 21 years of loyal service, he retired at the rank of Sergeant First Class from the Pentagon. During his army career Al received numerous awards including the Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge. While serving his country he still continued to show that he was a force to be reckoned with, as a member of the All-Army Track and Powerlifting teams.
In the summer of 1981, he became a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated through the Kappa Chi Chapter.
After retiring from the Army, he furthered his career working for the federal government. During this time Al also found his passion for cars and landscaping.
Al was preceded in death by his father, Alburtos Horne Sr., mother, Ethel C. Horne, brothers Albert Horne, Darryl Horne (Charlene).
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Daphany S. Horne, his children Nicole Numa, Carlos Horne, Monica Horne; grandchildren, Paul Hill Jr., Carlynn Numa, Trinidy Tabron, Zion Boyd, Abigail Horne, DeAndre Birton, Nevaeh Horne; siblings, James Flagg (Marie), Rhonda Reeves (Frank), Michelle Gary, Eric Horne, Michael Horne Sr. (Olivia), Alicia Horne and host of nieces, nephews, other family members and dear friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 11th at Redeemed Church by Shirley Wallace. Interment will follow at Albert G. Horton Jr. Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk. There will be a viewing from 2 pm to 7 p.m. Thursday, August 10th at Smith Brothers Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to The Wounded Warrior Project in honor of Al Horne Jr.
