Alma .L Barkers Mitchell, daughter of Elizabeth V. Barkers White and Linwood Collins, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, September 27, 2022 after a short illness and stay at the Old Dominion Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility.
Born September 5, 1935, Alma attended Hampton public schools, graduating from George P. Phenix High School in 1953, after which attending Virginia State for 2 years.
Alma met and married the late Walter .L Baldwin, Sr. of Mt. Gilead, N.C. in 1954 of which their union bore5 boys, Walter Jr., Jerome, Kenneth, Stanley, and Eric.
After the birth of their first child, Alma moved toNiagara falls, NY, and aside from raising her children,
she worked as a nurses aide and a switchboard operator at Niagara Falls Memorial Hospital, and later a switchboard operator for theContinental Can Company of Tonawanda, N.Y.
Alma returned to Hampton ni 1981 andquickly tookthe role of matriarch of the White clan. She again found work as a switchboard operator for the Bank of Virginia, Norfolk, and later the Chesapeake Retirement Complex of Newport News, finally retiring after working nearly 50 yrs.
Alma is predeceased by her mother and father, sons, Walter, Kenneth and Stanley. Left to cherish her memory are sons, JeromeBaldwin, Niagara Falls, N.Y. and Eric Baldwin, Humble, Texas, and Step-son Larry Watkins(Sonya), of N.C., sister, Shirley Dennis, Hampton, VA., brothers, Leverette White, Irving White(Sarah), both of Hampton, Michael White(Jean), Chesapeake, and Donald White(Shannon) Virginia Beach, as well as a host of nieces, nephews and grandchildren
