Alphonso Lee Slade was born on July 27, 1939 in Newport News, VA to the late James Wesley Slade, Sr. and Julia Blanche Slade.
God saw fit to call our loved one home on Tuesday, December 19, 2023. He was the eighth child of eleven children.
Alphonso was a lifelong resident of Newport News and was educated by the Newport News Public School System. He worked as a painter and for Mayflower Moving Company. He was an extraordinary handyman, which he did most of his life.
He enjoyed watching old western movies and walking through the neighborhood talking to his neighbors. Words cannot express how much he loved spending time with his family. Alphonso was a kind hearted, loving and funny person who would make you smile. He had a heart of gold.
Alphonso is preceded in death by his parents, one son, Darren Tracey Slade; two grandsons, Keith A. Slade, Jr. and Jabarie C. Smith.
He leaves to cherish his most precious memories; his children, Antone L. Slade, Keith A. Slade, Sr. (Anjetone), Evelyn Smith, Michael Spencer (Tracey), Trina Spencer; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Alphonso may be gone from our sight but he will never be gone from our heart. He will be sorely missed.
“The face we loved now asleep laid low;
His loving voice is still;
The hands so often holding ours;
Lies now in death’s cold chill.”
