Augusta B. Diggs, age 89, while living in McDonough, Georgia, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2025, surrounded by her family at Eternal Hope Hospice.
Born on April 20, 1936, in Hopewell, Virginia, Augusta lived a full and meaningful life devoted to her faith, family, and friends. She was a woman of grace, strength, and kindness whose gentle spirit touched everyone who knew her.
Augusta was a longtime resident of Baltimore, Maryland, before returning to Virginia, where she raised her three children. After graduating from high school and completing business school, she worked faithfully for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Hampton VA for more than two decades. She later continued her career in public service with the City of Newport News Mayor’s Office and City Manager’s Office, earning numerous accolades, certificates, plaques, and awards for her dedication and excellence.
A loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Augusta took great pride in her family’s accomplishments. She enjoyed traveling, reading her Bible, volunteering, and attending church services. She also served faithfully as a prayer counselor and dedicated member of her church community.
She was preceded in death by: her beloved son, Darius E. Diggs; mother, Ethel G. Baker; father, John G. Baker; aunts, Bertha Gholson Harris and Susan Gholson; siblings, Sarah, Dorothy, Waverly “Brother,” Lloyd, and Maybelle Goode; niece, Mary E. Pryor; and several cousins.
Augusta is survived by her daughters, Donna M. Diggs Butler and Darlethia Deneen Brown; son-in-law, Tony M. Brown; grandchildren, LaKeshia Stringfield, Keriston N. Diggs, Darell D. Diggs, Toneen D. Brown, Tonia Brown Davis (husband Cash Davis), Tyleen Brown, and Darionna D. Diggs, and several great-grandchildren who will continue to cherish her memory and carry on her legacy of faith, love, and service.
