Betty Johnson Obituary

Bettye Louise Yelverton Johnson, 93, of Newport News, VA passed away on April 29, 2023.

Bettye was born November 4, 1929, in Bayonne, NJ the daughter of Malcolm Yelverton and Jimmie Lou Hamlin (White).

Bettye was educated in the Bayonne School District.

Bettye married Edward Lee Johnson on October 23, 1976, at Friendship Baptist Church, with Rev. L.R. Gibson officiating. They were married 41 years until Edward’s death on August 8, 2018. 

Bettye especially loved reminiscing, reading, sewing, crocheting, and word find puzzles. 

Bettye was a devoted member of Friendship Baptist Church in Bayonne, NJ until she moved to Hampton, Virginia, where she became a member of Little Zion Baptist Church. 

Remaining to cherish grandchildren, Denise Peterson (James II) and Janeen Ricks (C. Andre); great-grandchildren, Jamon Isom (Morgan), Andre and Davion Ricks and Francine Peterson; great great grandchildren, Bryson and Jaylen Isom, sister, Helen Florence; nieces, Patricia Malone, Whitney Hamlin, Julie Hartsfield, Cheryl Yelverton, Tracy Mongomery and nephews, Frederick Florence II (Rachel). Thomas Hartsfield (Maria), Anthony Yelverton (Anna), and great nieces and great nephews Elaine, Angelic, Krystle, John, Tanaja, Heather, Thomas, Durell, Olivia and Frederick III, Thomas IV, Christina, Undray, Candice, and Gregory.

Preceding Bettye in death are her husband, Edward Lee Johnson, step-daughter, Lenora Ellis; parents, Malcolm Yelverton and Jimmie Lou Hamlin; brothers, Malcolm and Kenneth; and sisters, Annie and Evelyn.

Visitation will be held on Monday, May 8, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Smith Brothers Funeral Home, 545 E. Mercury Boulevard, Hampton, VA. The funeral service will be held Monday, May 8, 2023, at 12:00 Noon at Smith Brothers Funeral Home, with Reverend Jonathan Waldon officiating. Interment will be at Hampton Memorial Gardens in Hampton, VA.
