Carrel Skeen Jr. Obituary

Carrel Wesley Skeen, Jr., known as Wes, 80, of Hampton, Virginia, passed away on Monday, July 22, 2024 at his home after a short illness.

The son of Carrel W. Skeen, Sr., and Mary Gladys Starling Skeen Gordon of New Castle, Delaware, Wes was born on March 15, 1944, in Baltimore, Maryland.  While living in St. Louis, Missouri as a young boy, he became a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan and attended many games at Busch Stadium during his lifetime.  After moving to Delaware, Wes then attended the preparatory boarding school, The Lawrenceville School, in Lawrenceville, New Jersey from 1958-1962.  While a student there, he played football, baseball, basketball and was a member of the glee club.  After graduation, he enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh, majoring in history and joining the Delta Tau Delta fraternity.  His time at Pitt was greatly impactful, as he was known throughout his adult life as a diehard Pitt fan, even attending Pitt sporting events in back in Pittsburgh and in other places across the country after he had moved to Virginia.  Wes took a break from Pitt to serve his country in the U.S. Army, and then returned to Pitt to finish his degree.  During his time at Pitt, Wes tended bar in the Oakland area at the Luna, which he purchased after his graduation.  He owned the Luna until the early 1980s and then moved into the civil service – first for the state of Pennsylvania, then by moving to Army TRADOC Headquarters at Fort Monroe, Virginia.  At Ft. Monroe, he managed the NCO Club and Officers Club, and finished his civil service career working for the Military Personnel Services department there.  Known for being the life of the party and quite the joker, Wes had many great friends from his time at Ft. Monroe (including the Soiree Group), and gained another group of friends after he retired in 2011 and moved to The Woodlands at Phoebus in 2019.

Wes was proceeded in death by his parents and his three older sisters.  He is survived by his two daughters, Missy Lonce and Cindy Skeen; two granddaughters, Katie Thompson and Ashton Lonce; and a grandson, Carson Lonce, as well as many nieces and nephews, and his many friends.

A private memorial service will be held in the future.
