Clara Louise Murray, age 81, of Hampton, Virginia, passed away peacefully on December 9th in the presence of her loving family.
Clara was born on August 21, 1943 in Battleboro, North Carolina to Mary and Arthur Whitaker. She graduated from Crestwood High School and completed coursework at Saint Leo University. She was an active mother involved in the PTA and worked closely with faculty and staff at Albert W. Patrick (Booker) Elementary School. Clara worked as a Sales Associate at Peebles Department Store for many years. She proudly supported Joseph in his 22-year Air Force career and during his tenure at NASA Langley Research Center. She was also a member at Centurion Interdenominational Church in Hampton, having served as the historian in prior years.
Clara, affectionately known as “Darling”, was a beloved wife, mother, and yaya (grandmother) known for her generous spirit, classy demeanor, sky high heels and love of fashion. Her greatest joys were rooted in family, friendship, and travel, especially cruising. She enjoyed attending special events (e.g., concerts, dances, theater), and was invited, given her keen sense of style, to model in a Macy’s Department Store fashion show. She liked reading, listening to music, and giving gifts, including touching cards, to loved ones. Her kindness was felt by all she encountered.
Clara is survived by her husband of 57 years, Joseph Murray, daughter La Tondra Murray (Myron), daughter Tiffani Murray, brother Wilbert Whitaker (Ann), grandchildren Madison and Jadon as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Arthur Whitaker Jr (Sandra - deceased).
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 18th at Centurion Interdenominational Church, Fort Monroe, at 11 am. Contributions in Clara’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.
