Dorothy Tynes

Dorothy Underwood Tynes, age 92 entered her eternal resting place on November 24, 2024, peacefully transitioning in Newport News after an extensive journey with Alzheimer’s disease.  She was born in Docena, Alabama in 1932, the daughter of Addie Copeland Underwood and Archie James Underwood, both of whom preceded her in death as well as her only son, Kirk Tynes.

 She grew up mostly in Newport News (Newsome Park). She graduated from Huntington High School in 1949 and earned a BA in English from Hampton Institute in 1956. She taught school in Laurinburg, N.C. and Washington D.C. for a few years before beginning a career of civil service working for the United States Air Force, from which she ultimately retired in 1995.

A memorial service will be held at Smith Brothers Funeral Home, 545 East Mercury Blvd., Hampton, Va. 23663 on Tuesday, January 14, at 11:00 am.
