Dr. Lewis Bellinger Jr. Obituary

Lewis J. Bellinger departed this earthly life on Friday April 8, 2022, after a lengthy illness having been a resident at the Coliseum Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center in Hampton, VA,

Lewis was born on May 16, 1944, to the late John and Thelma Bellinger in Columbia, South Carolina. Lewis received his primary education from St. Martin de Porres Catholic Elementary School and his secondary education from Booker T. Washington High School. After graduation from high school, Lewis went on to earn his Batchelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro North Carolina. After graduation, Lewis accepted a engineering position in New Jersey where he held various leadership positions with several companies prior to his relocating to Michigan in response to being recruited and subsequently offered a position with Ford Motor Company.

While in Michigan, Lewis worked for Burroughs Corporation, and after several years of service he returned to Ford Motor Company. During his tenure with Ford Motor Company, Lewis earned his Master of Science in Industrial Engineering and his Ph.D. from Wayne State University. Lewis experienced many successful years of service at Ford and after obtaining many of his goals, left Ford Motor company and moved to Virginia where he accepted a position as dean and professor in the Management School of Business at Hampton University in Hampton Virginia. Lewis in his second career was a successful administrator in higher education and went on to retire from Hampton University after several years of service. Lewis remained in Hampton Virginia after his retirement. In retirement, Lewis spent a great deal of his time on the water, exercising, going to the gym, playing tennis, enjoying life, and serving as a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, INC.

Lewis was a devout Catholic, and faithfully attended St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Church in Fort Monroe Virginia until the church was forced to discontinue having open services due to COVID 19. He remained faithful with paying his tithes.

Lewis was a decorated Army veteran and received his honorable discharged on March 14, 1970. In addition to his many years of volunteering for several human service organizations, Lewis was a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, INC. where his leadership was greatly appreciated. Lewis loved to hear great Jazz, attending concerts, traveling, playing golf, playing tennis, and sailing on the water. For many years Lewis owed his own Sailboat while in Detroit, Michigan.

Lewis will be greatly missed and those who had the opportunity to know him, grew to admire him and all his accomplishments. He leaves to morn his son, Keith Michael Bellinger, favorite cousin Sandra L. Wesley, a host of other dear cousins, family members and friends.
