Elder John W. Smith was born in Brunswick County, North Carolina on July 23, 1950, to the late Elder John W. and LilaLee Lewis. He was educated in Hampton City Schools, graduating from Phenix High School in 1968. He served in the United States Army for two and a half years as a Communications Specialist defending his country at home and abroad. He attended Thomas Nelson Community College and Angelos Bible Institute and College, where he received an Associate’s Degree in Ministerial Education.
He was employed with the government for thirty years and retired in June of 2007 after receiving numerous awards and accommodations. He was a born again dedicated man of God, who loved to talk, teach, and preach God’s word. He would roll his sleeves up and do whatever it took and was needed to get the work of God accomplished. He was a true servant of God. He had committed himself and the church to serve the homeless in the community.
He had worker faithfully in the church first as a member and answered the call to the ministry at Emmanuel Chapel Church of Christ Holiness, U.S.A, under the leadership of the late Elder William H. Riddick on February 13, 1982. He served as an Associate Pastor at Calvary Evangelical Baptist Church and while there renovated the sanctuary and installed a sound room in the church. He returned to Emmanuel Chapel and in July 1992, under the leadership of the late Bishop Eugene Brown, Sr., he was ordained as a Pastor and was sent to minister at Mt. Olive Church of Christ Holiness. He has held numerous positions in the body of Christ.
He has been married to Sis Gloria Riddick Smith for almost 58years (as of February 16) and they have been blessed with four children: Victor (Sandra), Vina’ta , Vortorian (Allauna) and Stephen. He was a loving husband, father, uncle, brother, and friend. God has blessed them to have sixteen grandchildren: Dorian (Brittany), Brianna, Julianna, Oran (Stefanie), Trinity, Amaya, Isabella, Tristan, Jakob (Bryanna), Maya, Zofia, Oshe’a, Victor Xavier , Isaiah Wayne, Jeremiah Ezra and Jazlyn and three great grandchildren: Micah, Patience and Dorian Jr..
He was preceded in death by his sister, Ivou Bassfield, and his brother, Jarrett Smith, and his parents, John and Lila Smith. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Gloria, his aforementioned children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, his sister Lila Girlene (Bernard), his brother Joseph Alandis, and a multitude of family and friends.
