Ethel Fowlkes Obituary

Ethel E. (Walker) Fowlkes was born in Drakes Branch, VA, on September 25, 1940 to the late Albert E. Walker and Mary Morrell (Daniel) Walker.

Ethel attended school in Charlotte County, VA where she graduated from Central High School.

Ethel (Baby Sis), was baptized at an early age and was a member of St. Michael Baptist church in Drakes Branch, VA. She became a member of Holy Cross Baptist Church after moving to Philadelphia, PA and Macedonia Baptist Church in Hampton, VA was her last place of worship.

Upon moving to Philadelphia, PA, Ethel attended Philadelphia Community College; she also took other continuing educational courses. She worked for the Post Office and did some office work. Ethel also had a few sideline ventures, (trying to get that car); she delivered newspapers, dabbled in real estate and sold Avon. After moving to the Hampton Roads Area of VA, she worked as an Office Assistant for the Newport News Police Department, from which she retired after many years of loyal service.

One thing that Baby Sis loved was to travel. She would hop on Amtrak and head out from coast to coast.  She was very active in her community; planning bus trips for the neighborhood children by selling cupcakes and cookies at her daughter’s school.  At the end of the day she could be found fishing beside her husband, Chester, in any old fishing pond he could find.

Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Chester R. Fowlkes and daughter, Sharon L. Fowlkes.

Those left to cherish Ethel’s most precious memories are; daughters, Ethyl M. Freeman (David) of Lawrenceville, VA., Jacqueline A. Fowlkes (Reginald) of Upper Darby, PA; brothers, Albert Walker, Jr. of Drakes Branch, VA and James F. Walker of New York; grandson, Christopher A. Freeman of Lawrenceville, VA; a special nephew, Thomas (Tony) Walker of Meherrin, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Baby Sis may be gone, but she will never be forgotten.
