Frances Vaughan Obituary

Frances Marian Dandridge Vaughan was born December 12,  1930, to her parents: Frank and Naneen Dandridge in  Lexington, Virginia. The family moved to Roanoke, Va. when she was eight years old. Frances attended the Public Schools of Roanoke where she graduated amongst the top ten of her graduating class of Lucy Addison High School. Attending Virginia State College (University), she majored in Art  Education. In addition, Frances pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha  Sorority, Inc. at Va State College.

Frances served as a member of the faculty of Huntington High  School where she taught Art in the 1950’s. Consequently, she married Staff Sgt. Frederick A. Vaughan and moved to  Norfolk England where she taught in the Lab School at RAF  Skullthorpe Air Force Base for three years. In addition to her teaching, she also held the position of Choir Director for the  Base Chapel. Upon returning from overseas, she also taught in the Lab School at Bowie MD. before moving back to  Hampton where she taught at Carver High, Carver  Intermediate, and what is now known as Crittenden Middle  School until she retired in 1989. She received her Master’s  Degree in School Administration from Hampton Institute.

Frances joined First Baptist Church of Hampton in 1955  where she enjoyed singing in the Christian Fellowship Choir under the direction of Dr. Roland Carter and Dr. Effie T.  Gardner. She loved the choir and cherished every moment of singing in the choir for so many years.

She enjoyed singing, interior design, gardening, and traveling. She traveled to Africa twice and Europe on many trips. Her sweet, nurturing personality was inspiring and appreciated by many and will be cherished by many.   She loved people, and people loved her. She was a devoted mother, sister, and grandmother who was deeply loved and will be missed desperately by her family.

Mourning her loss are her daughter: Karen Vaughan Palmer  (Ramonn, deceased); a granddaughter Lauren N. Palmer; a  grandson Mark N. Palmer; her sister Brenda McIntosh  (Patrick, deceased) of N.Y ; a devoted niece and nephew:  Monica Vaughn Moore (Jeff); and Victor Vaughan (Yolanda)  of Florida; and Abrielle Moore of N.Y.

A viewing will be held on Tuesday, February 1st from 2 to 7 P.M.

A private Celebration of her life will be live-streamed beginning at 11 A.M. on Wednesday, February 2nd.
