HT Hutcheson, born July 26, 1945, in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, was the fifth child to the late Henry and Annie Hutcheson. A graduate of the 1964 class from East End High School, HT continued his studies at Kittrell College, where he met his first love, Rosa (Alston) Hutcheson. Following their marriage, HT and Rosa relocated to Hampton, Virginia, as a beautiful family of five, to include their precious daughters, Teresa, Tara, and Tammy, after securing a position at the Newport News Shipyard. While working to support his young family, HT sought to further his education by attending Norfolk State College (now Norfolk State University), where he graduated in 1978. His passion as an educator and coach led him to devote years to instruction in physical education, special education, and to coaching across a myriad of mixed sports disciplines. After HT and Rosa amicably parted ways, HT met Teresa Rook and her son Chavis, and they settled in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. Following Teresa Rook's untimely death and amid his own health challenges, HT decided to retire from the North Carolina school system and returned to Hampton to be close to his daughters. He settled into a wonderful community where love abounded, and he was a beloved resident until he passed on June 8, 2026, surrounded by family. Anybody who knew him knew he was an avid fisherman and passionate football fan. His most cheered football teams were for the Norfolk State Spartans and the Washington Commanders. HT was adored by his apartment community and affectionately referred to as “The Mayor” for his watchful care of his neighbors and his event organizing abilities. HT never swayed from being himself, and he had a village of friends, family and associates who loved him for being quintessential HT. He has been loved dearly and will be missed immensely. HT was preceded in death by brothers John, Charles, Lewis and Carl Hutcheson, and sisters Elizabeth Ashford, Kathleen Thomas, and Annie Dove. He is survived by brothers James (Elaine), Calvin (Brenda) and Mickel Hutcheson; sister- and brothers-in-law Barbara Hutcheson, Roy Ashford, Arlington Thomas and Thomas Dove; ex-wife and devoted friend and caregiver, Rosa; daughters Teresa Simms, Tara LaCour and Tammy Hutcheson and their spouses; granddaughters Jazzmen Thompson, Destiní LaCour-Lopez, and Imani Hutcheson and their spouses; great-grandchildren Amirah and Kareem Thompson; bonus son Chavis Winford Caudle and his spouse; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family extends heartfelt thanks for the love, support, and prayers received, with special gratitude to Certified Nursing Assistant Ashleigh Williams; Adoration Healthcare; Riverside Palliative Care, Adrienne Rolon, Nurse Practitioner Stephen Balka, and Gentiva Hospice. A celebration of his life will be on Monday, June 15 at 1:00 pm with a viewing one-hour prior at Venture Grove Baptist Church, 7800 Redlawn Road, Bracey, Virginia.
