Hazel Marie Edwards was born November 12, 1938, in Littleton, NC to Charlie and Frances Alston. She was educated in the Halifax County School System before moving to Newport News, VA. It was there where she earned her Cosmetology license at Madam Daniels School of Beauty Culture and met Hillary Edwards, Sr. while he was on military leave. They were married on February 19, 1964.
As an Army wife, Hazel travelled the world, made a beautiful home everywhere they lived, and developed lifelong friendships. Due to the many required moves, she deferred her chosen career as a beautician to raise her children and began a career with the Army Air Force Exchange Services’ food service industry until her retirement from the Run-In Chef at Fort Monroe, VA.
Hazel and her husband settled in Hampton, VA where she was known for her “…house on the corner with the beautiful yard”. She not only enjoyed, but she excelled at gardening, decorating, and making floral arrangements. Her talents led her to charter the Flower Club at Antioch Baptist Church in Hampton, VA. She also enjoyed collecting dolls and porcelain figurines from Germany, and shopping with her friends where she was the driver of the group. Hazel also found the time to give back to the community. Her knowledge of nature, skills, and personal characteristics made her an effective and loved Cub Scout Den Leader. (The cookies were a favorite as well).
Hazel was preceded in death by her father, Charlie Alston; mother, Frances Taylor Alston; brother, Elliott Alston; sister, Charlotte Delores Brown; and her beloved husband, Hillary Edwards, SR.
Left to cherish her memory are daughter, Frances Reid (Harold); son, Hillary Edwards, JR; grandson, Marlon A. Mailey, Jr.(Symone); granddaughter, Lezah Ellison; and great granddaughter Miyah Mailey; brother-in-law, Henry Edwards (Althea Lavern); sister in laws, Verly Williams and Mary-Jane Fields; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
