Ivan Breon Courtney, a beloved son, brother, husband, father and friend, passed away peacefully on December 17, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. Born and raised in Hampton, VA, Breon was the youngest of ten children in a loving family and was the last to leave his earthly home. He grew up in Third Baptist Church in Hampton and joined at an early age. He accepted responsibility and participated in a variety of programs, including being a Trustee, Scout Master, and a faithful member of the choir.
Breon attended Union Elementary School in Hampton, one of the largest Rosenwald schools, where he began his educational journey. He later enrolled in Phenix High School where his talent on the basketball court shone brightly. A multi-sport athlete, he also played football and earned a life-saving certificate in swimming. It was there that he caught the eye of his future wife, Geraldine Jordan, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with love and devotion.
After graduating from Phenix High School, Breon pursued higher education at Virginia State College (University). However, his academic journey was interrupted by his service in the U.S. Army. During his time at Fort Gordon, GA and in Germany, he continued to excel in basketball, playing for his Signal Corps unit and earning the respect and admiration of his peers.
Breon's career path took him to government civil service at Langley Air Force Base, where he worked in Base Supply. For over 20 years, he had responsibility for spare parts and supplies that were critical for ensuring the readiness and safety of the base. Upon his retirement, he was a well-respected supply manager. He was also a long-time and active member of the Beau Brummel Civic and Social Club.
Breon is survived by his loving wife, Geraldine, their daughter, Michele (Shawn), his grandchildren Eric and Courtney (Kyle), and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss him dearly. He is preceded in death by his mother; Myrtle Brown Courtney, his father; Vernon Mahone Courtney, and siblings: Lilian, Oliver, Vivian, Vernon, James, Joseph, R. Stanley, Ruth, and Ernest. The family requests that expressions of sympathy be sent to the church in Breon's memory, as desired.
Rest in peace, Breon. Your legacy of love for family, and your kindness will never be forgotten. Your life was marked by your dedication to your family, your passion for basketball, and your unwavering commitment to serving your country. You will always be remembered for your warm heart and quiet demeanor.
