Kenneth Lee Charity Sr. (May 19, 1952 – January 29, 2026)
HAMPTON — Kenneth Lee Charity Sr., 73, transitioned peacefully on January 29, 2026, in the quiet care of the Hampton Veterans Administration Palliative Care Unit. A true son of the Peninsula, he was born and raised in Hampton, Virginia, where his life was defined by service, music, art, and an unwavering commitment to his roots.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, Sanford J. Charity and Marjorie Randolph Charity, and his brother, Randy Charity.
A standout athlete in his youth, Kenneth was a defensive player during his high school football career at Pembroke High School (1970–1971) and Kecoughtan High School (1971–1972). Upon joining the military, he served with distinction as a male vocalist in the U.S. Army Band and Chorus. His voice was an instrument of peace and honor that took him across the globe, sharing his gift with audiences on foreign stages and in his local community alike.
Kenneth was a man whose life was anchored by his unwavering love for Jesus. His faith remained his foundation through all of life's chapters, and he cherished his spiritual rebirth above all else.
Known to many as the "Catcher Man," Kenneth had a legendary knack for never coming home empty‑handed from a fishing trip with his favorite catching partner and Uncle, Waverly Charity. Kenneth had a deep appreciation for the beauty of the world, expressed through his love for art and gardening. Whether tending to his plants or engaging in artistic creation, he found peace and joy in nurturing life and creativity. Kenneth was also a magnificent actor alongside his wife in the Easter and Thanksgiving plays at GSC, performed under the production of Sister Rhoda Holt. His passion for performance extended into every space he touched.
Kenneth was a dedicated member of the American Legion Post 67, where he served his fellow veterans. He shined within his beloved “Karaoke Family,” effortlessly turning any room into a celebration with his unforgettable voice. Whether wearing his signature black leather cowboy hat, his leather Commanders jacket, or carrying his ever‑present iPad with his devoted “Sis,” Diva Dee, faithfully by his side, it was always show time. His presence, energy, and joy lit up every stage he touched.
He leaves behind a profound legacy of love and is cherished in memory by his devoted wife, Bessie; his daughter, Krystal; his son, Kenneth Jr. (Meagan); eight grandchildren; and two great‑grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Constance, Shirley, Sonja, Sandra (Leroy), and Sherryl; his brothers Sanford (Dianne), Kevin, David, Irvin, and Allen (Michelle); as well as a large and loving family of aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends. To many, he was lovingly known as “Dad,” “Brother,” “Uncle,” “Grandfather,” or simply a beloved member of their family.
While his physical presence is mourned, his family celebrates that he is now at rest.
