Leonard Arrant Alexander died on December 8, 2024. He was born in Newport News, Va. During his lifetime (72 years) he was a resident of Washington, D.C. and Hampton, Va. In his youth Leonard served faithfully as an acolyte at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Newport News, Va. where his father was the pastor during the 1950's and early 1960's. He graduated in 1970 from Bethel High School and from Virginia State College (now University) in 1974.
As an adult Leonard was employed as a telemarketer and a substitute teacher (Hampton City Schools). It was music, however, that was the central focus of his life. He played in school bands as a youth and with other musicians for church services and functions throughout his adulthood. As a music education major in college, Leonard was versed in several instruments; it was the trumpet, however, that was his first love. He would play it anywhere and anytime he got a chance. Leonard had a "unique" personality that he expressed through his music as he often walked to the "beat of a different drummer" throughout his whole life. Preceded in death by his father, the Rev. Lloyd M. Alexander, his mother, Helen A. Alexander, and his brother, Lloyd M. Alexander Jr.; he leaves to cherish his memory his sister, Juanita Alexander of Hampton, his cousin Frederick (Cynthia) Alexander and special and cherished friends Debra Davis and Cheryl Mitchell and family (Newport News) and Calvin Fitzgerald (Washington, D.C.). The family also thanks the hospital of the Virginia Commonwealth University and Northern Cardinal Rehabilitation and Nursing Hospital (Suffolk). Thanks also to the church families of First Baptist Church (Morrison) and St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church for all the love and support given to Leonard.
