Lt. Col. (Ret.) Wilson A. Younge passed away on May 12, 2024, at the age of 85. He was born in The Bronx, New York, in 1938, and was raised in Beaufort, South Carolina and Harlem. He enlisted in the United States Air Force at age 18. During his 30-year military career, he lived in France, England (twice), Spain and many parts of the United States. He also served in Vietnam, 1970-1971. While on active duty, he obtained both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree, became a commissioned officer, and retired as a Lt. Colonel.
After retirement, he followed his wife's career, which included moving to Panama for five years. Upon her retirement, both returned to their home in Poquoson, Virginia, where they resided for another 22 years.
He was an avid reader and lifelong learner. Moreover, he was a strong supporter of family and friends pursuing higher education, and often helped young scholars.
He is dearly missed by his family, including his wife of 59 years, Joan Younge, his son and daughter-in-law Nathan and Debi Younge, and his grandson Tyler Younge. He is pre-deceased by his parents Wilson Young, Sr. and Ollie Leslie, his step-parents Mamie Young and Robert Bryant, Sr., and his brothers Bernard Edwards, Reggie Edwards and Robert Bryant, Jr. He is also survived by his sister Sharon Jones, brothers Randy Edwards and Reginald Bryant, his sister-in-law Joyce Mason, his cousin Allen Young, and many extended family members.
A memorial service is planned for June 7, 2024, 1:00pm, at Parklawn Memorial Park, in Hampton, Virginia.
