Margaret Gwenett Whiting

Margaret Gwennet Whiting entered into her eternal rest on Monday, June 15, 2026 in Gloucester, Virginia.

Margaret was born on May 12, 1955, in Hampton, Virginia to the late David C. Whiting Sr, and Leanna Gulley Whiting. 

Margaret received her early education in the Hampton Public School System and graduated from Kecoughtan High School In 1974. Thereafter, Margaret matriculated at Norfolk State University receiving her BS Degree in Social Work in 1978. She went on to get her MA Degree in Family Counseling from Hampton University.

Margaret settled in and around the District of Washington, D.C. for the majority of her work history. She also returned to Hampton, Virginia and worked a few years there and then moved back to Woodbridge to work. She held several jobs and chose them for the experience they provided her. To list a few; she was a Young Life Counselor, a caseworker for patients in nursing homes representing them as their advocate. Margaret worked for the Office of the Dean Of Women at Hampton University. She was also a teacher of inmates at Lorton Prison.  Other jobs she held in Hampton, Virginia included working as an elementary, middle, and high school substitute teacher. Margaret’s last full time job was working for 7 years as a mail carrier in Woodbridge, Virginia.

Upon retirement, Margaret settled in Gloucester County, Virginia in 2022. She enjoyed decorating her place, feeding the birds and squirrels that visited her yard and tending to her various house plants. Margaret enjoyed participating in family gatherings and traveling. She loved to go to church, listen to her favorite preachers on the radio or television. She made it a daily practice to study the word of God. Margaret was proud to tell those who would listen that she use to be an active member of Grace Church in Dumfries, Virginia. 

Margaret let her presence be known to those she encountered.

She loved her family and was concerned about their lives.

Left to cherish her strong personality are her brothers, David (Brenda)Whiting, Michael Whiting, Dwayne Whiting and Stacy Whiting; three sisters Cathewayne (Samuel) Paul, Margie Whiting, and Joanie (Webster) Banks. She has a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family who has preceded her in death were her parents, her brother Mitchell Whiting, her sister Delsey Hopewell and her brother-in-law Elder Woodson H. Hopewell Jr. Margaret will be forever loved and missed.
