Mary Poulson Obituary

Mary Ann Poulson (Smith-Hack) was born on November 21st, 1948 to the late Frances Smith-Duncan and the late Dorsey Hack. She fell ill October 10th, 2022 and was hospitalized for two weeks. She came home for two weeks, but became hospitalized again due to being critically ill. Mary transitioned peacefully amongst her husband, daughters, son-in-law’s, and grand kids at her daughter’s home in Yorktown on Friday, November 11th, 2022. Her transition was a moment of peace for her due to her pain and suffering.  

Mary had a kind soul and gentle spirit. She was a devoted mother to her 6 girls known as “The Six Pack.”  She loved her grandkids while taking care of each one of them as if they were her own. She devoted most of her time to her family. She would always make her famous yeast rolls, macaroni and cheese, collard greens and stewed tomatoes during the holidays.  She loved to get her daughters to do her nails and go shopping. Mary was always involved in her daughter’s education and volunteered at their elementary school. She was just a vibrant and lively person to be around and helped anyone in any way that she could. Mary graduated as the Valedictorian from Mary N. Smith High School in 1968. She was a homemaker and took care of her kids.  In addition, she was a member of New Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Exmore, VA.  She later become a member of The Nation of Islam with her husband.  

Mary was preceded in death by her mother Frances Duncan, father Dorsey Hack, daughter Vernita Poulson, granddaughter Zuri Bannerman, sisters Emma Duncan and Ruby Johnson, nephew Torray Johnson, niece Niyah Nock, and sister-n-law Mary Duncan.  

To cherish Mary’s precious memories: her husband Leonard Lee Poulson of Hampton VA, daughters Fontella Poulson of Hampton VA, Pamela Poulson of Hampton VA (Dion Newsome-Future Son-In- Law—Hampton, VA), Cassandra (Derrick) McKinney of Yorktown VA, Jameelah Poulson of Newport News VA, Shakeela (Jawan) Dickerson of Hampton, VA, one sister Dorothy (Albert) Chisum of New Church, VA, four brothers John Duncan of Wachapreague, VA, James (Laura) Smith of Painter, VA, Louis (Rosa) Duncan of Horntown, VA, Pastor William Duncan of Melfa, VA. In addition, sister-in laws Frances Titus and Lucille Duffy and brother-in-law Louis Poulson. Granddaughters Ramya, Corrina, Nakyla, Kamirra, Khalia and Malia. One grandson Antonio and nephew Brandon Johnson (special son and care giver). Also, a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends. 

A service to celebrate her life will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 19th, 2022, in the chapel at Smith Brothers Funeral Home with Pastor Edwin Jones II officiating. Mary may be viewed two hours prior to service at funeral home. Interment will follow the service at Hampton Memorial Gardens.  Family and friends are asked to assemble by 11:30 a.m. at 322 Blacksmith Arch Yorktown, VA 23693. A viewing will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. on Friday, November 18th, 2022.
