On Thursday, June 13, 2024, God dispatched his angels to come and get our beloved sister, aunt and friend to take her to her eternal home.
Mary Elizabeth Stokes was the first child born on August 22, 1934, to Samuel Stokes, Sr. and Virgie Stokes in Lunenburg County, Virginia. As a teenager, Mary, along with her parents and other siblings relocated to Newport News, Virginia where she resided until her parents were blessed to move to the historical neighborhood of Aberdeen Gardens where she resided the rest of her life.
Mary attended Lunenburg Elementary School, until she relocated to Newport News. She then became a VIKING, as she was a proud student at Huntington High School in Newport News, Virginia.
Mary worked various jobs throughout her lifetime, but most memorable and important to her was her position with Riverside Hospital. Throughout her career with Riverside, her siblings and anyone who would give her a listening ear would be informed of her numerous experiences as she was hippopotamus proud to share.
If any of her family members had a illness or injury, Mary would quickly share what should be done based on what her experiences at Riverside had taught her.
Anyone familiar with Mary knew she was a family orient person that truly loved her family and worked hard to help support her younger siblings. She had a few loyal friends that she enjoyed spending her social time with, of which most of them predeceased her.
Mary was predeceased by both parents, two brothers, Samuel Stokes, Jr. and John Edward Stokes, Sr., and two sisters, Virginia and Iva Juanita Stokes. Mary will forever be missed by her surviving siblings: Annie Chandler, Agnes Chisman (Lafayette/Bubba) Gertrude Jones (John), Cleveland Leon Stokes (Barbara), Jewel Silver (Michael), Ruth Lewis (Glenn) and Tony Stokes; long-time friend, Eddie, that she was blessed to have, as he checked/visited her daily and offered help in any way that he could, along with a host of Nieces and Nephews,
