Mildred Hopson Obituary

Mildred Virginia Lee Hopson, daughter of the late Ezra and Frances (Jennings) Lee went to be with the Lord on December 3, 2023.  She was the second oldest of five girls. Born and raised in Montvale, Va. (Bedford County), she attended elementary through high school graduating at the top of her class at Suzie Gibson High School.  At an early age, she accepted the Lord into her life and was baptized at her family’s church, Montvale First Baptist. During the summers of her high school years, she stayed (and worked) with her aunt and uncle in Hampton, Virginia where she met and later married the love of her life, Theodore Roosevelt Hopson.

Mildred (Nana) and Theodore (Hop) married in February of 1948 and moved into a home in the Aberdeen Gardens community in Hampton, Va.  This union was blessed with three children and lasted 56 years until Hop’s death.  During this time, Mildred attended Peninsula Business School in Newport News, Va. and after 20 years, retired from Hampton City Schools.  She loved writing poems and authored a book, “Told to Tell,” her personal story and testimony inspired by God of her journey through serious illness, death experience and the amazing miracles of God along the way.

Mildred became a faithful and active member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and remained there for many years until God sent her to New Bethel Baptist, where she remained faithful until her death.   Always being an eager and active Christian, she joined and formed several church ministries and committees at both churches.  This included, but not limited to the Deaconess, Usher, Hospitality and Missionary Ministries; Ladies Fellowship, Prayer Warriors, Jadie S. Covington Thursday Noon Day Bible Class, Church Women United and Wax Museum that portrayed many historic well known black women.

Mildred’s life was filled with ceaseless faith and unselfish devotion to her family and friends.  Many called her “Mom” or “Mom Hopson” and all who knew her will remember this amazing woman of God and influence their lives forever.  She is preceded in death by her parents, sisters Margaret Wheeler and Beatrice Penn, and grandchildren Aaron and Kim.  Her beautiful life will be forever cherished in the lives of sisters, Adeline Wright and Shirley Taylor; children, Theodore (Angel) Hopson, Gwendolyn Hopson Jennings, Gayle (Cleveland) James; grandchildren, Sybille, O’Neil (Dara), Tony, NaNette and Brittney (Deidrich); and great-grandchildren Dyonne, Demi, Denny, Kris, Mikailah, Nia and Bryson.  Her memory will also be cherished by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, friends, and church members.
