Mildred J. McCormick was born on ‘Nine-Nine-twenty nine’ as she would say and was called home to be with the Lord at the age of 93. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 16, 2022 and was reunited with her, late husband, Malachi ‘Mac’ McCormick and late son, Kenneth McCormick.
She is survived by her daughter, Vickie McCormick (Herbert Godwin), daughter-in-law, Rev. Sabrena McCormick, brother John Thomas, and three grandchildren, Sean McCormick, Daryl McCormick (Joseph Warren) and Nasheed Goodwin and a host of family and friends in spirit.
Mildred was a passionate believer in Christ and was long time and active member of Bethel AME Church where she was a stewardess and a founding member of the J. Alton Butts Choir. She also had a love for sewing. She was a seamstress for over 70 years and made Bethel’s altar rail communion clothe, reusable facial mask and countless alterations for her church family, friends and loved ones during the height of the pandemic.
Mildred had a love of gardening and cooking. Moreover, by far, her largest contribution in life was loving and comforting those around her. One would be hard pressed to find grandma at home as she was always on the move visiting friends and the sick and shut-in of our church and community. However, when she was home, all were welcomed at her house. Anyone that visited her at home was most certainly leaving with some food, a couple dollars and some encouraging words. She was a member, Pride of Hampton #150, Order of the Eastern Star; former member Zem Court #98, Daughters Auxiliary of AEAONMS
Mildred will lie in state on Sunday, September 25 from 12:00pm to 4pm at Smith Brothers Funeral Home (545 E. Mercury Blvd, Hampton, 757-723-4117). A memorial service will be held for grandma on Monday, September 26th at Bethel A.M.E Church (2521 N. Armstead Ave Hampton, Virginia 23666) at 1 PM. All are welcome to say farewell.
Memorial donations, in Mildred’s name, may be made to Bethel AME Church, 2521 N. Armstead Ave Hampton, Virginia 23666 ( https://www.bethelhame.com).
