Ramona Hayes Moore, aged 76, passed away on September 3, 2024, in Newport News, Virginia. Born in Winston Salem, North Carolina, Mona was known for her sassy, beautiful, and generous spirit. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, cherished for her love of family, western movies, and her dog, Babie Jane.
Ramona graduated from Huntington High School before earning her degree from Norfolk State University. Her professional life was marked by over a decade spent as a planner for NN Shipbuilding and Dry Dock, followed by a 25-year tenure as an educator in Hampton City Schools, where she taught Language Arts and English at Langley Elementary and Jones Magnet Middle School.
Her faith played a significant role in her life. Ramona was an active member of the Second Baptist Church, E.E. in Newport News, where her Father was the Pastor for 50 years. She contributed her musical talents to the church choir and served as the 8:00 am pianist for several years.
Ramona's hobbies included painting, traveling with her family, watching westerns, loving her dogs, and spending time with her grandchildren, who brought her immense joy.
Ramona is survived by her daughters, Rachel Andrews (Carl) and Deena Moore (Douglas); sister, Melerdee Wallace; grandchildren, LeiMeredith Byers, Leondra Graves, Delayne Graves, Leon Edwards III, Deionne Edwards, niece Sahira Wallace, several cousins, several nieces and nephews, extended family and friends, and her sweet dog Babie Jane. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Preston T. Hayes and Geraldine Crews Hayes.
Public viewing will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2024, from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm with an Ivy Beyond the Wall Ceremony at 6:00 pm at Smith Brothers Funeral Home, 545 E. Mercury Blvd, Hampton, VA 23663. A Welcome Home Celebration will take place on Friday, September 13, 2024, at 11:00 am at Second Baptist Church, E.E., 3303 Chestnut Avenue, Newport News, VA 23607.
Smith Brothers Funeral Home in Hampton, VA, is assisting the family with arrangements. Ramona will be deeply missed by all who knew her, leaving behind a legacy of love, education, and faith.
