On Friday morning, November 10, 2023, Rev. Dr. Salathiel J. Henderson, I was called by God from Labor to Reward while at Sentara Careplex Hospital in Hampton, VA. He was the first of four children born to the late Mr. James Joseph & Mrs. Merlice McIntosh Henderson on June 15, 1944, in Key West, FL.
Rev. Henderson graduated from Douglas High School in Key West in 1962. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and meritoriously served his
country for over 23 years. While serving his country, he continued his educational pursuits by earning an Associates of Arts and Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies at Saint Leo College (now University). In June 2010, the Canaan Theological Seminary in Hampton, VA conferred upon Rev. Henderson an honorary Doctor of Divinity in recognition of his excellent work in the Gospel Ministry and devotion to improving the quality of life for all mankind.
Dr. Henderson remained an active member of the Antioch Baptist Church, Hampton, VA as an Associate Minister. While also actively involved in the Music Ministry, Bereavement Ministry, and Military Ministry at Antioch until July 2023 when his health began to decline; Dr. Henderson held a number of prestigious posts of honor including being a silver life member of the NAACP and Chaplain of the organization’s Hampton branch; President of the Ministers' Coalition for Hampton and Vicinity (MCHV); President for the Board of Directors of the Hampton VA Federal Credit Union; and former Pastor of the New Beginning Faith Community Baptist Church of Wakefield, VA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his only brother Cornelius.
Dr. Henderson's memory will be treasured by his devoted wife of over 54 years Mary Louise; his two sons: Salathiel J. II (Stephani, long-time partner) and Chaplain Shane J. (Maria); grandchildren: Olivia, Kennedy-Rose, Yeshua, Saint Michael and, bonus grandson, Tashan; two sisters: Orissa (Robert) Brown and Rev. Dr. Gail Henderson; brother-in-law Rudolph (Kia) Henderson; sister-in-law Pearl Edwards; four God-children; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and devoted friends.
