Ruby Marjorie Lanc, 71, passed away on September 7, 2023, in Hampton, Virginia. She was born to Janie L. Lane and the late Maurice Lane, Sr. on November 28, 1951, in Newport News, Virginia.
Ruby was a lifelong student who began her education in Surry County Public Schools. She received both her Bachelor's of Science in Elementary Education and Masters of Education for Supervision and Administration from Virginia State University (VSU).
Ruby started her career in education as an elementary teacher in the Petersburg City Public Schools. She also relished in trying new things and decided to take on a new adventure in Indiana, where she shifted her career path to hospitality. She spent over 25 years in sales management in the Midwest working with various hotel brands. She was awarded the Marriott Golden Circle Champion and received the Pyramid Millionaires Club Award.
Her biggest passion, however, was teaching. When she moved back to Virginia, she became a substitute teacher for Hampton City Schools (HCS). She was recently recognized for her many years of service and dedication to HCS.
Ruby's proudest accomplishment was becoming a mother to her son, Andre. One of their shared hobbies was watching football and cheering on her favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys. Ruby also enjoyed reading, dancing, and traveling the world with friends and family to experience different cultural activities.
At an early age, she was baptized at Mount Nebo Baptist Church in Surry, Virginia. Her choir singing days started during her time at VSU and continued at her home church, Zion Baptist Church in Hampton, VA. Outside of the choir, Ruby was an active member with the Women's Ministry. Ruby was truly a woman of fortitude in all that she did.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory: her son Andre "Tiger" Metellus; her mother, Mrs. Janie L. Lane; three grandchildren: Amani Metellus, Dreden Metellus and Mia Metellus; five siblings: Jeanetta Lane, Morris Lane (Peggy), Malissa Lanc-Johnson (Sam), Ray Lane (Marion), and Maurice Lane Jr. (Pat); a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends; and her "fur baby," Teddy.
