Torrey Washington Obituary

Torrey Dumond Washington, a cherished soul known for his inventive spirit and compassionate heart, passed away on July 29, 2024, in his adopted home area of Hampton Roads, Virginia. Born to Ora Lee Washington and Kenton Ricks on January 1st, 1982, Torrey was a beacon of light and kindness throughout his 42 years.

‍Born and in raised in Alexandria, Louisiana; Torrey’s early life in church and community laid a strong foundation for a man deeply connected to Christ. He graduated from Peabody Magnet High School in 2001 and went on to Northwestern University, Natchitoches, Louisiana to pursue a political science degree.

Torrey was a lover of big cities and lived in New Orleans, LA. where he was a Porter with Amtrak, Houston, Texas where he was an Administrative Technician and finally, he settled in the Hampton Roads area in October of 2014; with his final occupation as a Technical Support Specialist with ADP. ‍

Torrey’s hobbies were a reflection of his faith in God. He became a fervent member of the First Baptist Church of Hampton Virginia, where he was a member of the choir, prayer and praise team, and any other role that needed to be filled.  He loved music and song.  He was skilled at playing the Baritone and prided himself on his booming singing voice.  He was a volunteer in the community with church and local food banks.  ‍He was a soul that gave his all; in time, in spirit and in love.  His infectious smile could brighten a room and everyone he encountered knew when he said “I love you” he meant it.  ‍

Torrey was predeceased by his mother, Ora Washington, his father, Kenton Ricks, his brothers; Darrell Griffin and George Fisher (BIL), his niece Brianna Chaney and his nephew, Taylor Branch.  His memory will be honored and kept alive by uncle Booker Johnson, Jr., aunt; Janice Johnson, his sisters; Charlonnie Chaney, Tamara Fisher, Kenya Jones, Katrina Lewis (SIL), Kimberly McKissack (honorary sister), his brothers; Andrew Osberry, Curtis Chaney, Jr. (BIL), Michael Jones (BIL) and Rickey Lewis (honorary brother-cousin), his cherished nieces; Kayla Branch, Jassmine Chaney, Aspen Frasier, Jaylyn Washington, McKenna Jones, Brooklynn Jones and Madison Lewis, his beloved nephews; Jordan Washington, J’Markus Washington (NIL), George “Trey” Frazier, III, Devin Chaney, Rickey Lewis Jr., Christian Lewis and Jackson Fisher; and a host of family, friends, church family, and coworkers.

Following the service, Torrey will be transported back to Louisiana to be laid to rest in Lincoln Memorial Park, Shreveport Louisiana to be near his mother Ora Washington and niece Brianna Chaney.  ‍

Torrey's life was a testament to the power of love, the strength of family, and the impact one person can have on the world around them. He will be deeply missed, but the memories he created will forever be a source of comfort, laughter, and inspiration to all who knew him. We will miss you, Mr. Beautillion 2000, Mr. Congeniality.
