Victor “Dyke” Blackwell, entered into eternal rest on February 28, 2026, in the comfort of his home after a long illness. He was born on April 21, 1955, in Reidsville, NC to Gonnie Redd Blackwell and the late Allen Howard Blackwell.
Dyke was raised in Newport News and Hampton, VA. He was a 1975 graduate of Kecoughtan High School in Hampton where he was a member of the cross-country track team. He had a natural talent in drawing and drew some of the most amazing pictures. He also loved karate during his younger years. He was employed at Newport News Shipyard for 21 years. He retired after many years of work at James River Country Club.
Dyke was an avid action figure collector with a collection that “wowed” many. He had a huge display that included all the Marvel Superheroes which were very precious to him. He loved to shop at thrift stores and would be so proud to show off some of his best finds. He would jokingly refer to the “thrift store” as “the mall”. He also enjoyed spending a lot of time at Buckroe Beach. Dyke was always willing to help his family and friends with whatever they needed. It was always a “Yes” or “I can do that”. It has been said that there should not be favorites in the family, but he was clearly the favorite of all by mutual consent.
Dyke’s spirit will remain in the hearts of his beloved family. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving mother Gonnie Redd Blackwell; one daughter, Monica Mitchell; one son, Vinson Perkins; two grandchildren Nelinah Winston-Holmes and Antone (AJ) Winston-Holmes; two brothers, Herbert Allen Blackwell (Nadine) and James Earl Blackwell (Theola); three sisters, Joyce Ann Harris, Chermont Foster (Gregg) and Tonia Blackwell; a host of nieces and nephews including a special niece Ashley Dennis who cared for him during his illness and a great niece Tyler Smith who put a “huge” smile on his face daily including many of his toughest days. Also left to cherish his memory is his aunt, Elizabeth “Polly” Graves and a host of cousins, friends and extended family
