William Edward Johns Jr., aged 89, of Hampton, VA, passed away on October 7, 2024. Born on July 19, 1935, "Eddie" dedicated 17 years of his life to serving in the U.S. Air Force, and following his military service, began his career as a delivery man for Pepsi Cola Co. and later drove for Hampton Roads Transit/Pentran for over 30 years. William was a graduate of George P. Phenix High School and furthered his education at Hampton Institute, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to self-improvement and knowledge.
Known for his ever-present smile and smooth-talking demeanor, he was revered as kind, patient, and a good listener, often sought out for his honest and sage advice. His hobbies reflected his engaging personality; he loved cleaning cars, attending jazz festivals, writing quotes, photography, journaling, and was a singer in a men's doo-wop group in the mid-50's.
William is survived by his wife Lucy P. Johns; his first wife Signora Johns; daughters, Alicia Johns, Jennifer Thomas, Robin Paige, and Michele Rheaves; grandchildren, Crystal Thomas, Jameelah Rheaves, Elliott Paige, Jovey White, Brandon Davis, Jaalah White, Elise Paige, Jameeah Rheaves, and Aniyah Williams, along with thirteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved sons, Richard Johns and Steven Sawyer and great-granddaughter Chanel Simone Johns-Contee. William's life and legacy will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life memorial will be held in lieu of a traditional service on Saturday, October 19th, from 2:30pm to 3:30pm at the Fort Monroe Community Center, located at 100 Stilwell Rd., Hampton, VA 23651.
