Yvonne Marie Johnson

Yvonne Marie Johnson, affectionately known as *Mama Opal* and *Opal Amirah Bilal*, was born on March 18, 1938, in Hampton, Virginia, to Charles and Evelyn Armistead. At the age of eight, she moved with her family to Washington, D.C., where she began a vibrant and adventurous life that would inspire generations.

A gifted seamstress, fashion designer, singer, and teacher, Mama Opal wore many crowns. She was a mother, grandmother, entrepreneur, community activist of the 1960s, and world traveler. Upon returning to Hampton, VA in 1975, she continued her lifelong dedication to culture and community as one of the grassroots organizers of the **Umoja Festival** in Norfolk and Portsmouth and helped bring African-centered celebrations such as **Kwanzaa** and African Studies events to the campus of Hampton Institute (now Hampton University).

Known for her strength, wisdom, and compassion, Mama Opal was a true Queen Mother—offering love, guidance, and truth to all who crossed her path.

She was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Evelyn Armistead; siblings Charles, Horace, Clara, Freddie, Bernice, Joseph, David, Lillian, Carol, Robert, Richard, and Evelyn; and her children Carolyn, George, and Pasha. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her children Richard Sabir Samee, Celestine (Frank Lewis), Gabriel (Valissa Armstead), Nia (Anthony Walker III), and Nadir (Lori Johnson); her grandchildren Kareem, Kalesha, Kiana, Karla, Nick, Nyeema, Nathalie, Frank Jr., Aleah, Janey, Gabriella, Gabriel II, Anthony IV, Xavier, Maxx, Ezekiel, Nyila, Jasmine, Yashar; and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends.

A celebration of her extraordinary life will be held on **November 21, 2025**, from **12:00 PM to 4:00 PM** at **McGrew Towers Conference Center**, Hampton University Campus, **24 Indian Rd, Hampton, VA 23669**.

Her spirit, wisdom, and love will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew her.
